Division

Students are working on dividing numbers, using several strategies.  Check out our blog for a video of these strategies.  Students need to see the relationship between multiplication and division and know the related facts.
EX:  4 x 3 = 12; therefore 12 divided by 3 is 4
Continue to practice multiplication and division at home.

The Rainforest is Coming!
Arrangements have been made for an appearance of Understanding Wildlife's "LIVE ON STAGE, THE RAINFOREST" to appear in our community.  This will take place at Graham Elementary on Monday, March 20.
Animal trainers will make a presentation during the day for all students at Graham Elementary at 10am and 2pm.  They will explain how energy conservation and recycling can help save the beautiful animals of the rainforest.

Then at 6:30pm, a wildly entertaining program will be put on for your entire family.  Students will be able to interact with a few of these magnificent creatures.  Flying macaws, talking amazons, and very mischievous monkeys will keep you laughing all night long.

The cost for the program is five dollars per person. (children under 3 years old are admitted for free). Plan now to attend and please, all children must be accompanied by an adult.

Multiplication
Students should start practicing multiplication flash cards and memorizing their facts.  They need to have quick strategies to solve their basic facts such as skip counting, repeated addition, using other facts they know, etc.  They should be moving away from needing to draw pictures or arrays.  Check out our blog at mrsbreslin.blogspot.com for videos and songs.

Since they are starting fresh this year, if they study and try to memorize them, they should be able to know many or most by the end of the year, preparing them for a lifetime of math fluency.  Students who focus on knowing their facts within three seconds and practice nightly will learn them.  Students brought home a Strategies for Learning Your Basic Facts for Multiplication page that shows the progression of the facts we will learn.  They also have multiplication flashcards.   Multiplication fact fluency is a crucial skill and learning it now will save them from struggling later, especially as we learn division!
