Reminders
~ Please check and sign your child’s planner each night.
~Please look through your child’s take home folder and go over papers that have wrong answers.
~ Reading logs are due the last day of the month; however, we will take as many 300 min logs as the student can complete, with a minimum of one per month.
~ We want homework to be a tool for parents to help their child at home.  Please check over your child’s homework.  We give homework in order for students to practice the skills we work on at school as well as to inform parents on the types of questions that your child will be expected to know in class.  If they need help, you may guide them or help them as needed.  If ever your child struggles too much or becomes too frustrated, please send me a note letting me know.

THANK YOU
Steven’s Bakery & Orchard
for sponsoring a fun, family night for our 3rd graders!

Would You Like to Volunteer?
Right now I have several boxes of books that need organized.  If you’re interested in coming in to work for an hour or two to help sort books, please contact me so we can schedule a time.

We are still working on elapsed time.  This is a difficult concept that requires lots of extra practice.  Please use the strategy page sent home today to help your child master this skill!

Scholastic Book Order:  Today students brought home a book order flyer and an instruction sheet.  I will try to send these home every month or every couple of months.  This is a convenient, inexpensive way to add to your home library to help your child become a better reader.  The GRL code tells what reading level the book is so that you can be selecting books that are just right for your third grade reader!  The easiest way to order is online at www.scholastic.com/bookclubs.  Use the class code JZ3GZ to ensure our classroom earns reward points for free books.
Reading O.A.A

It is important that your child is here on time Wednesday morning in order to begin the test.  Once testing has started, students will not be admitted to classrooms.  Please be sure your child has a good night’s sleep Tuesday night and a nutritious breakfast Wednesday morning.  There will be a snack the morning of the test but that does not take the place of breakfast.  We want to encourage students to do their best, but not make them overly “anxious”.

Encourage your child to do his/her best on the test by suggesting the following strategies:
a.      answer every question
b.     check over and read all answers when finished answering questions
c.     relax and do your best to concentrate
d.     allow for play and relaxation the night before the test.

Thanks to all families who were able to attend conferences.  I enjoyed talking to families and sharing everything we are doing here at school.  If you have any questions at any point, you certainly do not need to wait for a conference to contact me. Together, we make an unbeatable team in helping your child learn!

Reading Log Changes
For October, I will send home a reading log as usual. The difference will be when your child can turn it in. When your child has read 300 minutes, they can turn in their reading log and get their reward at that time. They can fill out as many 300 minute reading logs during the year as they want, getting as many rewards as they want, but they must complete at least one 300 minutes reading log each month. If at least one is not turned in, they will be on yellow and have to walk for 5 minutes of their recess. It is important that they receive a consequence for not completing this large assignment. We want to pave the road for smooth driving later in their school career when they will have multiple assignments to complete.
Unit 1 Math Test - Thur 10/3

Your child will be bringing home a review sheet/ study guide for this test. This test will cover everything we’ve studied this school year except telling time. This includes all types of subtraction, addition, and estimating/rounding. Please have your child complete this review sheet, as it very similar to the test they will take on Thursday. We have worked on these skills for awhile, so they should be competent in completing the problems. If they struggle, please walk them through the problem and see if they can do the next one on their own. If they continue to struggle, please write me a note and have them show it to me first thing in the morning. I will make sure I work with them in a small group or independently that day on that skill. ☺

More Reminders
~Some students still need a family photo for their cubby.
~Please sign your child’s planner each night.
